The City and County of Honolulu, Department of Environmental Services, State Department of Land and Natural Resources and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in coordination with other government agencies and volunteers like you, will mark the month of April, Earth Month, with a host of outdoor work projects and environmental displays.
Earth Month is more than a one-day event. It's a commitment to environmental awareness and ongoing change in our daily habits.
We encourage you to take a moment each day to help the environment and be an everyday environmental hero. Keep sidewalks, curbs and gutters clean; remember nothing but rain water should enter the storm drains; prevent soil and debris from leaving your property; remove and dispose of pet waste; use an oil change box to soa k up spilled oil and dispose appropriately ; and report illegal discharge or dumping by calling the City's Environmental Concern Line at 692-5656.
You can also get involved in volunteer work that is fun, rewarding and a great workout such as stream cleanups, trail restorations, trash and graffiti removal from streets or parks.
This year we are launching the "Be An Everyday Environmental Hero/Good Neighborhood and Good Business Program. The program will help citizens take the necessary actions to better steward their community's precious water resources. The program integrates the City's existing Adopt-A-Stream and Adopt-A-Block teams that make a commitment of 4 cleanups a year for a period of 2 years. The City and County of Honolulu, Department of Environmental Services, Division of Environmental Quality, Storm Water Quality Branch coordinates the progam and provides teams with support and supplies to carry out pollution prevention actions.
Please consider coming out for a work project. You will find a listing of upcoming events, at www.cleanwaterhonolulu.com. To register, click on contact us and fill out the online form. Donations are welcome for volunteer refreshments.
